July 5 - 9, Monday-Friday, 4 nights: Build Instruments, Record Songs, and Make a CD!
For kids ages 11-14.
This music workshop for kids involves using recycled and low-cost materials for building percussion, wind, and string instruments. In addition to creating an orchestra, kids will learn playing techniques for each instrument and compose and record their own original songs, culminating with a finished CD.
The things that kids will learn in this fun program include
Ensemble playing and physical coordination, Counting and rhythm, Creative writing, Simple notes, Musical arrangement, and Basic recording techniques.
Kids will work collaboratively to create music for solo and mixed ensembles. This music will then be recorded and mastered on a laptop computer during the workshop. The program will culminate with a CD release party, and each participant will take home a CD and the instruments they've built. Program instructors Lisa Karrer and David Simons, both accomplished musicians, will provide all necessary materials.
Note: Children in this program must be accompanied at Kripalu Center by a parent/adult who is registered for a program or R&R. TO REGISTER call 1-866-200-5203

During the workshop, kids will build instruments and learn to play world music rhythms, Gamelan, and songs on a variety of homemade instruments. They will also create a menagerie of imaginative masks and puppets. Using these materials, the group will explore ancient myths, and then create and perform new stories with shadow puppets and masked characters that feature their own original music.
The program culminates with an ensemble parade and performance, and all participants get to take their puppets, masks, and instruments home with them. All necessary materials are provided. TO REGISTER call 1-866-200-5203
